FRIM TO REDUCE NUMBER OF VISITORS Forest Research Institute - TopicsExpress

FRIM TO REDUCE NUMBER OF VISITORS Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) needs to reduce the number of visitors including joggers to its main campus in Kepong to reduce congestion, discomfort as well as protect the environment and ensure the sustainability of its forest ecosystem. This is one of the conclusions of a presentation entitled, “A Study on Physical Impacts of Hikers and Mountain Bikers on Nature Trails at FRIM” by FRIM Ecotourism and Urban Forestry Programme Head Dr Noor Azlin Yahya at a research talk (R-Talk) in FRIM yesterday. The R-Talk, organised by the Policy and Research Planning Branch at Dillenia Meeting Room on 23 December, was attended by 28 researchers. Dr Noor Azlin recommended the closure of intensively-used nature trails based on rotation after five-years of use to minimise soil compaction and to allow for regeneration of vegetation. She also proposed that FRIM: - Stop or limit the use of mountain bikes; - Promote low impact activities such as trekking on nature trail; and - Disallow jogging activities especially on canopy walkway trail. Dr Noor Azlin presented the findings of this study including on soil compaction, track width and correlated them with the number of users of FRIM nature trails which showed a direct link between the disturbances and the increased number of users.
