FROM A VOLUNTEER AT MCACC - When Im volunteering at Maricopa Country Animal Care and Control, I am asked almost daily How do you work here? I just couldnt...its too sad. I reply that I started out thinking that way. Id sit home and cry over the beautiful animals on the euthanasia lists and wish it werent so. After a couple of weeks, I decided to do more than that. I dont like the killing either but one day a week I go to the the second highest kill facility in the U.S. as an Adoption Counselor and another day to volunteer in ChiTown, MCACCs own little rescue. Why? Because I want to give the animals there what bit of comfort I can whether they get adopted or killed. A blanket, a treat, to sit by their kennel for a few minutes and speak kind words, to give a neck rub or ear scratch or cuddle goes a long way in keeping them from deteriorating. Do I still cry? Of course, many times, but its not about me. Its about them. Thats why I volunteer to walk the buildings that kennel more dogs than Ive ever seen, take them to the play yard for exercise and a little training, pick up poop, and occasionally adopt one out to a compassionate family who knows these are not just trash animals to be thrown away. Its by far both the most heartbreaking and extremely uplifting work that Ive ever done. Working at a high kill shelter doesnt mean that I support everything that happens there. But I do support the animals that are waiting for their fates to be determined.
