FROM A WEST COAST LADY:: Honoring all kinds of work today, and all kinds of laborers. Ill spend my day on the water, driving a ridiculously wonderful boat among whales, explaining their life histories to people who can afford a vacation. Meanwhile Im always cognizant that while I work hard to be able to do this, its largely by luck of birth into privilege of education, family encouragement, and living near the worlds best institutions of higher knowledge that I was able to follow this path that millions envy. I could have been born in a rice paddy or a refugee camp or a coal mining town or a migrant labor van. The work that people without other options do is no less valuable than mine. I wish to remember all the people of the world who incredibly hard work because they have to, to survive, or to make ends meet, or to live a modestly comfortable life. Especially, I honor the work of women everywhere, whose endless labor goes on without thanks or pay or respect or even kindness, who will never enjoy any profit from their work. On the backs of untold numbers of people whose lives are miserable, some of us enjoy relative ease. Slavery has taken new forms in the modern world. May the efforts to lift up those working the hardest and suffering the most continue, until all are free.
