FROM CHAPTER SIX, An Insatiable Hunger: ... (The young) Friedemann presented a vulnerable target, walking the broken, deserted pavement since daybreak, accompanied only by Astro. Looking for whatever fancied his imagination, he forgot about the 2:00 p.m. curfew. When he turned a corner, the sudden, loud command of an American sergeant, “Halt!” seared his ears. Six, cocked, M1903 Springfields pointed straight at his chest. Astro barked fiercely. Friedemann’s tears flowed. The soldier that shouted the order repositioned his weapon, and the others stood down. One of them squatted and calmed the dog. The officer in charge bent down, wiped the tears off the youngster’s face and reassured him that he wasn’t going to die today. Asked who he was, Friedemann was too scared to speak. He sniffled as the military unit escorted him and Astro to a tent set up as a makeshift holding-cell. “Sit here, sonny. And don’t try moving away, said one of the soldiers. Hungry and overwhelmed, sitting alone on a sack of potatoes, Friedemann heard and felt his mother’s words roar back into his brain like cognac on fire, You will never go hungry, if you become a chef. He pulled the worn illustration out of his pocket, unfolded it carefully and stared at the happy chef’s image. He resolved to one day leave behind the ruins of his motherland...
