EDITOR PATRICK, rREPOSTING HIS STATUS...eNGLIS GRAMMAR..sabi ko na nga ba, THIS MY BRAIN IS KILLING ME! ay MIGRAINE PALA!------- theres a character in the 18th century comedy, the rivals, called mrs. malaprop who uttered words in place of others that sounded the same. the term malapropism was coined because of her but ultimately its actually french for inappropriate. a few posts ago, poster corrected some friends use of the the term backfight, noting that the correct term is backbite or backstab depending on the situation. its easy to make this mistake since backfight seems a word that carries the same meaning and more in line, literally, with the act than biting or stabbing. theres another incorrect term that has been often used (masisigasig mag ingles eh hehe): splitting image. again its easy to get this wrong because a split image may produce two similar halves. we pinoys have the phrase parang pinagbiyak na bunga or the lurid pinagbiyak na arinola or puwet. however the correct term is spitting image. it is all about ejected saliva presumably coming from the father: he is the very spit of his father. so its origin is purely genetic. some argue that the spit may be from a different human ejection and it would be much more logical. but lets leave it at that (poster would like to maintain this post at GP, not SPG). just this morning he saw on his wall a post from a friend about a womans use of blessing in this guys but meant blessing in disguise. it is closer to the original term than the more popular blessing in the skies. but at least the latter can boast of a closer meaning. (though poster cant say much about their grammar.)
