FROM: SUNDAY’S OPEN Q & A Hosea 12:5 Even the LORD 3068 God 430 of hosts 6635; the LORD 3068 [is] his memorial 2143. I am having trouble trying to figure out how this verse fits into all this language and everything we know. Whats the question? Is it why LORD is said to be his memorial? Sorry, this verse... Hsa 12:2 The LORD 3068 hath also a controversy 7379 with Judah 3063, and will punish 6485 Jacob 3290 according to his ways 1870; according to his doings 4611 will he recompense 7725 him. I see the problem someone might have. Jacob is normally used in the Bible to typify the elect; but here the Lord speaks of punishing Jacob and recompensing him. We might think that Jacob here, in this passage, is being used a figure of the church like Israel often is. But I dont believe so. Because of what God says in verses 3 & 4: 3 He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength he had power with God: 4 Yea, he had power over the angel, and prevailed: he wept, and made supplication unto him: he found him in Bethel, and there he spake with us; The figure of taking his brother by the heel (supplanting him which he did when he received the blessing over his brother Esau); also the language of using his strength to have power with God was a time when Jacob wrestled with a man (God) and again received Gods blessing: Genesis 32:28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed. This language fits the true believer and not those in the corporate churches. Were helped in understanding this verse once we look at the word punish (#6485). It is often translated as visit. And sometimes in a good way. For instance God said He would visit Sarah with a child: Genesis 21:1 And the LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as he had spoken. Now we could read the verse this way: LORD...will visit Jacob according to his ways; according to his doings He will recompense him. The word recompense we tend to associate with Gods wrath. However, it is also used in a good way in 2 Samuel 22:21 The LORD rewarded me according to my righteousness: according to the cleanness of my hands hath he recompensed me.25 Therefore the LORD hath recompensed me according to my righteousness; according to my cleanness in his eye sight.
