FROM THE 1450 WNBY NEWS CENTER (1-21-15) In his 5th State of the State address on Tuesday night, Governor Rick Snyder called on the legislature to help create a river of opportunity for those who are struggling in Michigan. In addition, the governor proposed merging the Departments of Community Health and Human Services into the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. He says it will allow the states poorest resdients to better connect with services dealing with health, welfare and job training. The governor also wants to make third-grade reading a major focus this year. He called for the creation of a commission dealing with reading. A new Michigan State University poll shows President Obama’s approval rating in Michigan sagged to its lowest point in more than four years, while Governor Rick Snyder’s ratings held steady. According to MSUs fall 2014 State of the State Survey released Tuesday, Snyder’s approval rating was higher than Obama’s for the first time in the four years both have been in office. Obama’s 34.8 percent approval rating was down from 38.4 percent in the spring survey, and down from 48.4 percent in the winter of 2013. The Michigan Department of Treasury is now processing Michigan Home Heating Credits for the 2014 tax year. The credit assists low-income customers with winter energy bills. The average credit in 2014 was $130. Instruction booklets and forms have been mailed out by the Department of Treasury. For those people who file a tax return, the agency encourages them to e-file their returns because it speeds processing and reduces errors for the credit. Almost 82 percent of the Home Heating Credits were e-filed in 2014. WNBY SPORTS!!! Last night at the J.L. DeCook, the Newberry Indians got their third win of the season, beating the DeTour Raiders, 78-61. Newberry was led by the return of John Paramski with 20 points. Mitchell Wilson notched 14 while Josh Hood and Alex Johnson chipped in 10 each. DeTour was led by the game-high 27 points from Bruce Bailey. Newberry now sits at 3-5 overall, 3-1 in the E.U.P. Conference. The University of Michigan topped Rutgers 54-50 last night on the road in their first action without leading scorer Caris LeVert. Derrick Walton junior led the Wolverines with 12 points, Aubrey Dawkins added 11 and Zak Irvin finished with ten points. LeVert, who started the last 55 games for U of M, is out for the season after having surgery on his foot. Michigan, 12-7 overall and 5-2 in Big Ten Play, will tip off against Wisconsin at the Crisler Center Saturday. The Michigan State Spartans are back in action this evening when they host the Penn State Nittany Lions. Tip-off at the Breslin Center is 7:00 p.m.The Spartans (12-6, 3-2) are coming off Saturdays 75-to-59 loss to Maryland. In the Mid American Conference, Central Michigan (12-3, 2-2) will host Buffalo tonight. Tip-off at McGuirk Arena is 7:00 p.m. Eastern Michigan (12-5, 1-3) hits the road to take on Bowling Green (11-4, 3-1). Game time is 7:00 p.m. Western Michigan (12-5, 3-1) will look to remain in first place as they travel to take on Miami (OH) (6-11, 1-3). Game time is also at 7:00 p.m. The Detroit Pistons return to The Palace floor as they host the Orlando Magic tonight. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.Detroit is coming off a 93-82 loss to the Hawks in Atlanta on Monday, while Orlando has lost its last two games. ESPN reports nearly all of the New England Patriots footballs for last Sundays AFC Championship Game were under-inflated. According to the network, 11 of New Englands 12 allotted game balls were under-inflated by two pounds of air. Game balls are required to be inflated between 12-and-a-half and 13-and-a-half pounds per square inch, and most also weigh between 14 and 15 ounces.
