FROM THE 1450 WNBY NEWS CENTER (12-11-14) In what could be a major development, Michigan House Speaker Jase Bolger says he is open to the idea of a tax increase to fix the roads. Up until now, Bolger has been steadfastly against the idea. But Bolgers stance on a tax increase appears to be evolving. When asked Wednesday if he is willing to raise new revenue through a tax increase, he said (quote) Im open to that. The financial emergency in the city of Detroit is finally ending. Governor Rick Snyder has accepted Detroit Financial Emergency Manager Kevyn Orrs recommendation that the citys financial crisis has ended and that it should emerge from receivership. Snyder on Wednesday thanked Orr, who implemented a two-year budget that eliminates $7 billion in the city’s debt. Legislation that allows for suspicion-based drug testing for welfare recipients in Michigan is headed to the desk of Governor Rick Snyder. The bills, that received final legislative approval in the state Senate yesterday (Wed), establish a pilot drug-testing program in three, yet to be determined, Michigan counties. The program allows the Department of Human Services to subject welfare recipients suspected of illegal drug use to drug testing. State lawmakers often propose new laws on the state House floor, but one legislator made another kind of proposal Wednesday... a marriage proposal. In what may be a first for the Michigan Capitol, state Representative Klint Kesto of Commerce Township read a proclamation on the House floor yesterday (Wed) professing his love for his girlfriend, he then dropped to one knee and pulled out a ring. His girlfriend, Delena Kajy, said yes to the marriage proposal. WNBY SPORTS!!! Gustav Nyquist scored late in the second period to put Detroit ahead 1-0, but Toronto tied the score early in the third to send the game to overtime. Pavel Datsyuk was the only Red Wings player to score in the shootout, while the Maple Leafs were able to put two pucks behind Jimmy Howard for the win. Howard stopped 18 of the 19 shots he faced in regulation. The Wings host the Florida Panthers tomorrow night. The Detroit Lions returned to the practice field yesterday as they get ready for the final home game of the regular season against the Vikings on Sunday. Running back Reggie Bush did not participate yesterday because on an ankle injury. Bush was in the lineup in Detroits win over Tampa Bay Sunday, his first game back after missing three games because of the ankle issue. Receiver Calvin Johnson and right tackle LaAdrian Waddle were limited in practice yesterday with injuries. Lions tight end Joseph Fauria (FOR-ee-ay) has been placed on season-ending injured reserve after he re-injured his ankle in last weeks win over Tampa Bay. Earlier this year, he suffered a severe high ankle sprain in a fall at his home and missed six games. He aggravated the same ankle on Sunday in the first quarter, but returned to the field to score a touchdown in the third. He finished the season with six catches for 74 yards and one TD. Detroit re-signed tight end Kellen Davis to replace Fauria on the roster. NFC West rivals meet for the second time this season as the Arizona Cardinals take on the St. Louis Rams on Thursday Night Football at the Edward Jones Dome. The Cardinals held off the Chiefs 17-14 on Sunday to improve to 7-and-0 at home this season and 10-and-3 overall. Arizona leads the division by one game over Seattle. The Rams blanked the Redskins 24-0 on Sunday to improve to 6-and-7. After a 52-0 win over the Raiders the week before, the Rams have posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time since 1945. St. Louis lost 31-17 at Arizona in Week 10. Former Tigers pitcher Mike Maroth is moving up in the organization after he was named pitching coach with Triple-A Toledo. Maroth has spent the past three seasons in the same position at Class-A Advanced Lakeland. He spent parts of three seasons with the Mud Hens and had an 8-1 record in 11 starts for Toledo in 2002, but went 9-21 as part of Detroits rotation in 2003, the year the team lost 119 games.
