FROM THE ALTOONA MIRROR: HARRISBURG, Nov. 27 – State Rep. Gary Haluska, D-Cambria, said a $225,395 state grant will pay for numerous projects to improve water quality in the Upper Chest Creek watershed in Cambria County. The grant was provided by the Commonwealth Financing Authority through Pennsylvania’s Watershed Restoration Protection Program. “Upper Chest Creek suffers from a number of problems due to abandoned mine drainage, timbering, agricultural production and other factors,” Haluska said. “The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy sought this grant to help reduce pollution and other problems in the watershed, particularly Upper Chest Creek itself.” Haluska said the stream and watershed restoration projects along Upper Chest Creek will include stream bank fencing, culvert replacement, stream bank stabilization, dirt and gravel repair, riparian buffers and other work. Construction will take place over the course of three years primarily on private land. The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy has protected more than 235,000 acres of natural lands in the state over the past 80 years and has helped to restore watersheds across Pennsylvania. Of the total land protected by land trust organizations in Pennsylvania, nearly half has been conserved by WPC. The Commonwealth Financing Authority is an independent state agency that administers several funding programs that are part of Pennsylvanias economic stimulus packages. The CFA holds fiduciary responsibility over these funding programs and invests in the protection of Pennsylvanias natural resources and in the growth of the state’s economic growth.
