FROM THE HISTORIC MEETING OF THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE NEW LAGOS MOVEMENT Some 50 professional elites across industries, businesses and careers converged on the Lagos Travel Inn, Toyin Street, Ikeja, on Saturday, 25 January, 2014 in what has been described as historic meeting of professional elites to chart a course of active participation in the Nigerian political firmament. 1. Participants at the meeting, after due consideration, agreed that over a long time, professional elites had abandoned the political community to a band of ideological and economically limited individuals controlled by a small band of self serving elites that had since turned participatory democracy to trading transactions and deals making. 2. The meeting frowned at the culture of fence-sitting by Nigerian enlightened citizens that take comfort in mere verbal criticism of disturbing issues and trends in the political environment. 3. Participants vehemently voiced their dismay at the obvious abuse and compromise of progressive tendency and ideology by politicians that have continued to exploit the appeal of progressive ideology for personal gains. 4. It was also agreed that the political environment have become so convoluted with the heavy influence of money, primordial sentiments of religion and ethnicity and characterized by a crass pursuit of material wealth which continue to sideline and marginalize the larger percentage of the Nigerian mass. RESOLUTIONS On These Accounts, it was agreed that: 1. Members present and professionals everywhere in Nigeria should make it a point of duty to be interested in the political affairs of their immediate neighbourhood and environment. 2. That enlightened Nigerians should make a commitment to their callings by focusing, as collectives, on becoming part of the salvage crew necessary for the redemption of true democracy in the country. 3. For starters, members present reasoned that since the preponderance of members at the January 25 meeting are Lagos based professional, it was agreed that the immediate focus of the group should be on Lagos State, therefore, by a majority vote of members the group was christened The New Lagos Movement. 4. It was also resolved that since the All Progressive Congress represents, as of this moment, the only true platform of progressive politics in the country, the New Lagos Movement should align its activism and participation in politics with the APC. 5. The meeting acknowledged the efforts of the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and saluted the administration of Mr Tunde Raji Fashola in the management of Lagos State but however noted that there are still much to be done in service delivery to Lagosians at the Local Government and ward levels. 6. The meeting observed that most functionaries of the State either in the National Assembly or the State House of Assembly had more or less abandoned Lagosians as they merely initiate and pass laws that reflect their fancy without due connection to the needs and desires of most Lagosians. NEXT MEETING: The meeting was adjourned to Saturday, 8 February, 2014 at the same venue; Lagos Travel Inn, Toyin Street, Ikeja, Lagos at 3PM. MEMBERSHIP MOBILISATION: It was also resolved that members should maximally exploit the social media as platforms for mobilizing and populating the New Lagos Movement. On this note, it was agreed that each member should invite 10 new guests from their social media accounts like Facebook and Tweeter to the next meeting.
