FROM THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN TOPEKA: Here is an updated outlook for the approaching winter weather tonight into Saturday night. This system will likely cause some travel impacts with some minor ice accumulations also possible. What is the hazard, how big? This is not a major storm but it still looks like it will bring a mixed bag of winter precipitation later tonight through Saturday night. Some areas could see up to one tenth of an inch of ice due to freezing rain and freezing drizzle later tonight through early Saturday morning There may be a break in the precipitation during the midday hours where only drizzle falls but we do expect an area of snow to overspread the area by mid to late afternoon. This area of snow could bring a quick 1-3 inches to the area. Timing? Rain/Freezing rain/Sleet will spread into east central KS in the 6pm to 10pm time frame. This area of freezing precipitation will spread toward I-70 after midnight. As mentioned, there could be a break in the freezing precip by mid morning Sat as air temps rise to above freezing. A separate area of snow will move into the area after 3pm Saturday. Accumulating snows will be possible mainly from 3pm to around midnight on Saturday. Duration? There will be precip in our area Friday night through Saturday night. However it will come in waves with the overall storm system moving quickly. Most areas will only have 6 to 12 hours of winter precip with around 6 to 8 hours of accumulating snow possible. Location Check out our attached PDF document that contains maps of where we expect ice/snow accumulations at this time.
