FROM THE NEWSROOM AS REPORTED ON WINY 1350 AM: More details now on the manhunt from earlier today in Willimantic. State Police Lt. Paul Vance confirms that a suspect is in custody following a search that took place after an unknown male subject ambushed and shot a Willimantic police officer who was reportedly performing a well being check at a residence on Tunxis Lane after a call came in requesting the check at around 11:15. The Willimantic officer was shot in the arm, sustaining non-life threatening injuries and proceeded to call for backup. Several local State Police units were called in to assist Willimantic Police with the investigation and search for the suspect, utilizing K9 units and a police helicopter before locating the suspect on Route 32. Shots were exchanged between the suspect and police before the suspect was apprehended near a supermarket, suffering a wound from a K9 unit that was deployed. The suspect was transported to Windham Hospital and is reportedly in stable condition. The Willimantic officer is also in stable condition. The identities of the officer and suspect are being withheld at this time. Upon further investigation a deceased male was located in the residence where the incident began on Tunxis Lane, leading police to deem the case a homicide investigation. The Central District Major Crime Squad has been charged with investigating the scene where gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and police while the Eastern District Major Crime Squad is investigating the original crime scene where the body was found.
