FROM THE NEWSROOM: Access to fire hydrants can save precious time when fire fighters are battling a blaze. The Town Killingly will be installing three new hydrants within their Villages, within the next few weeks. This topic was discussed at a meeting attended by the Fire Marshalls from the Villages and Borough tonight. Killingly Fire Marshall, Randy Burchard explained that as a result of a replacement project, new water lines are being installed in Attawaugan to update their facility. This project has presented the opportunity to place a new hydrant at the corner of Church Street and Route 12; and a hydrant at the corner of Church Street and Ballouville Road. Last week, while responding to a brush fire on Brickhouse Road, the fire department found that it could not access a pond located in the area to obtain water. Seeing a need for accessibility to fire crews during an emergency; a resident on this road has offered to build a fire pond for the department, where a dry hydrant will be placed. Burchard remarked that this hydrant will save valuable minutes by eliminating the need to lay out a piece of hard suction and a floating strainer into a pond; instead, a fire hose can be inserted straight into the dry hydrant; which in turn will pull water from this body of water. Stay tuned for more details.
