FROM THE NEWSROOM: After months of discussion revolving around which town to connect the sewer project in Pomfret to – with the option of Killingly previously on the table – Pomfret First Selectman Maureen Nicholson has confirmed officials are now clearly moving in the direction of hooking up into Putnams system. Nicholson said running the lines from Pomfret School, Rectory School and Loos & Co. into Putnam appears to be the most cost-effective solution, especially given recent major upgrades to Putnams system; the plan would be to take the same route as the Air Line Trail for this project. Currently, the sewer project is in the design phase with the drawings now being finalized, and the goal is to start construction sometime next year, according to Nicholson. The First Selectman said there will be public hearings and informational sessions before the plans would go to any sort of public vote; there will also likely be an informational mailing going out detailing the extent of the project and its time line. She also explained that with the project being funded $5.9 million in loan and grant money secured years ago, and costs being incurred by sewer users, the new sewer line will not impact local taxpayers in any way. Nicholson said at a later date, its possible that Pomfret Community School may be able to tie into this system as well. Tune in for the full report.
