FROM THE NEWSROOM: As the recently announced January 22nd date for the ceremonial groundbreaking of the regional YMCA project in Putnam approaches, philanthropist Betty Hale of the Newall D. Hale Foundation appeared last Friday on the WINY morning show where she reminded the public how this project will benefit the community. Hale explained the importance of ensuring families – ranging from young children to their elderly grandparents – learn how to swim, a healthy and potentially life-saving skill for anybody to have; she considers the publics access to a pool and swimming classes to be one of the most important features the YMCA will have to offer. Campaign counsel for the regional community YMCA, Ron Coderre, who says the project is only $225,000 away from its fundraising goal, also praised outgoing State Senate President Pro Tem Don Williams for his work in securing more than $3.7 million for this project. However, Mayor Tony Falzarano also recently stated on the WINY talk show that theres still more work to do, claiming that the town has run into some stumbling blocks with the state – according to Falzarano, state officials misplaced a 200-page transportation report document, delaying the construction progress. Tune in for the full scoop.
