FROM THE NEWSROOM: Could Killingly see the establishment of its own townwide police force in the upcoming years? Its a possibility being discussed by the Killingly Town Council, which recently voted to put together a committee to study alternative operations to meet local law enforcement needs, including the possibility of a Killingly police department. Town Council member Tammy Wakefield said everyone seems to think the town should have a police force, including herself; however, she noted that it comes along with a price tag between $3 and 4 million a year. Wakefield noted, however, that should the Town Council choose to leave the additional resident state troopers in the budget proposal, that would already be a $1 million step in the right direction; between those troopers and the appointed constables system which will launch next year, Wakefield said a solid transitional phase should be set up between the towns current state and where it should go with its own police department. The committee – which will be composed of residents, Town Councilors, and possibly some resident troopers or members of the Public Safety Commission – will work alongside the Public Safety Commission to explore possibilities moving forward, including the future of the resident state trooper program which may eventually be dissolved.
