FROM THE NEWSROOM: Few answers followed an executive session among members of the Sterling Board of Education last night. The special meeting stemmed from an incident in which a five-year-old student was mistakenly taken home by the wrong grandparent after school on February 21. The board immediately called an executive session for “discussion regarding attorney-client privileged written communication.” The agenda for the meeting also noted “possible action pertaining to Board Response to Student Dismissal concern.” While attendees were not able to comment during the meeting, several parents waited patiently in the school library for what they believed was going to be an announcement of what disciplinary action would be taken by the Board of Education related to the dismissal incident. But following the meeting, Board of Education Chairman Renee Keech would not comment on what was discussed at the meeting or what action was taken. “Were not allowed to discuss whats in executive session” said board chairman Renee Keech. “The motions that we made were as a result of the discussion in executive session,” she said. One parent expressed sustained concern about the dismissal procedures at Sterling Community School, but acknowledged that since this incident, school officials have become more strict about policy. Overall, parents said that the safety of their children remains the primary concern, along with accountability of school staff that allowed the mistake to occur. Tune in for the full report.
