FROM THE NEWSROOM: In Brooklyn, school officials are planning to change the design of the student pick up and drop off system, in hopes of improving safety. “We have some congestion in our transportation program here, in the morning and the afternoon, when we drop off or pick up our students,” says Superintendent Dr. Louise Berry. “Many parents are picking up students via their own vehicle and [it does create] congestion with the buses.” She says the school districts goal is to redesign the traffic pattern around the campus, specifically near the elementary school where she says its becoming “overwhelming.” Berry says the district wants to expedite the process for parents who are driving onto the campus to drop off or retrieve their children. “I also realize that our bus drivers are concerned, because there is a lot of confusion – specifically at the elementary school – concerning parent pickup and bus pickup. When we get buses and cars in the same traffic pattern, we are causing ourselves great difficulty in terms of safety,” says Berry. She says that the traffic pattern must be redesigned to alleviate the congestion and protect children who at present may dash out between cars and buses to reach their parents waiting vehicles. Tune in for the full report.
