FROM THE NEWSROOM: In Putnam, one Water Pollution Control - TopicsExpress

FROM THE NEWSROOM: In Putnam, one Water Pollution Control Authority project has gone out to bid and another is in the process of being sent out to bid, according to Town Administrator Doug Cutler. Bids have come in on an approximately $4 million project which focuses on the towns existing sewer lift stations, and an apparent low bidder has been identified, Cutler affirmed last week. At the time he also mentioned the towns intentions of meeting with the bidder as soon as possible to work out all the details in terms of awarding the bid. Cutler hopes that work can start soon after the bid is awarded, but stated that he isnt completely sure how cold temperatures will affect progress. “Its not like youre digging in frozen ground or anything like that, but it still might be dependent on the weather,” he said, keeping in mind that the existing sewer lift stations are being renovated—basically to brand new condition—and not constructed from the ground up. The town will also be going out to bid on a manganese treatment facility, which is going to be built at the town well field off of Park Street. The need for this type of facility was discovered when it was found that a great deal of manganese, a chemical element, was pulled out of the towns ten wells. “Its not a health hazard, but it does cause problems—particularly with some of the industrial users in town; you dont want to have a high manganese content before some of their processes,” said Cutler. The treatment facility has already been designed; now, the next step is to send it out to bid. Cutler said he hopes that bids will be in by the end of December or early January and one can be awarded around that time. Tune in for the full report.
