FROM THE NEWSROOM: NEWINGTON, Conn. (AP) — Newington schools schools superintendent is defending a decision to skip Halloween celebrations at elementary schools. The Bristol Press reports that School Superintendent William Collins said principals at two schools banned Halloween costume parades and the other two schools do not have daytime Halloween parties or activities. Collins said accusations that the district canceled Halloween are false. In a letter posted on the districts website, he said Halloween costumes do not belong in school and cannot be worn during the school day. He said Halloween and other holiday decorations are permitted but should avoid sending the message that one religion or a particular denomination is preferred over another. Schools should instead focus on fall activities. Collins said the district received threatening and hateful phone calls and emails from national extremist groups he did not identify.
