FROM THE NEWSROOM: No decision has been made yet about what to do with the Killingly High School gymnasium floor, an issue that has been ongoing since caused buckling and cupping of the basketball court soon after it was built. However one councilor thinks there may be an easy fix to stop water from collecting beneath the gym. John Sarantopoulos circulated a photo at this weeks council meeting showing what he says is a vent on the top of the high school that could be a source of the problem. “In my estimation, rainwater is getting in there. That could be a part of what is creating the problem with the gym floor,” says Sarantopoulos. “ Town council and school officials have been debating whether to sand down the surface or replace the floor altogether, but pending the results of an engineering report from UCONN due next month, members have repeatedly tabled the item. No standing water has been recorded in the ventilation tube extending from the roof since it was drained last year, though officials note it has been an unusually dry season. Monitoring will continue through the spring.
