FROM THE NEWSROOM: (REFERENDUM VOTE) In Thompson, taxpayers are asked to head to the polls today to vote on a $163,000 appropriation to pay for costs related to the removal and replacement of an underground oil tank at the Thompson school complex. As reported, the tank behind the Thompson Middle School was the site of an oil leak earlier this fall; school officials say an outside contractor failed to properly secure valves, allowing more than 2,000 gallons of heating fuel to flow out of the tank. Voters are asked today to approve an appropriation of $163,000 from the un-designated surplus fund to the Building Improvements line item in the Capital Expenditures Budget. Its expected that the state will reimburse just over 70 percent of the cost of removal and replacement of the tank. The referendum vote will be held at all of the regular polling locations in Thompson from noon until 8 p.m. The tank was due for replacement in the next two years, school officials earlier noted. The town is pursuing a legal settlement with the contractor that allegedly caused the issue.
