FROM THE NEWSROOM: Radon, what health officials call a naturally occurring, invisible, odorless radioactive gas, is a silent killer. According to national health authorities and a study by Harvard University, Radon is “Americas leading in-home hazard,” and is the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. January is Radon Action Awareness month, in which health officials urge residents to test their homes. Education and Communications Coordinator for the Northeast District Department of Health Linda Colangelo calls exposure to radon “very, very dangerous” and says the gas can exist virtually everywhere. Radon is naturally occurring, formed in the breakdown of uranium in bedrock, and is relatively harmless outdoors – but can become a hazard indoors if it seeps into your home. The only way to know if its present is to test your house – the Northeast District Department of Health provides Radon Test Kits free of charge. Colangelo says the best time of year to test for radon is the winter. You can contact the NDDH at (860) 774-7350. Tune in for the full report.
