FROM THE NEWSROOM: The Brooklyn Board of Education is continuing to make slow progress on acquiring a new fire alarm system for their Elementary and Middle Schools, though the endeavor has been hampered in part by problems with securing accurate cost estimates for the large scale project. As reported, the project wont likely get off the ground until the next school year at the earliest. In the past, the Board hired a consultant, but did not receive the findings. When they attempted to calculate their own estimates, members ran into problems when they realized they did not have the expertise to determine the specifics of a more connected alarm system in the schools. The board will next meet with the Capital Committee to come up with a more comprehensive plan for the next fiscal year. According to Chairman of the Board of Education Mae Lyons, the elementary school doesn’t have a sprinkler system. While officials say the schools are safe under the current alarm system, the project has become a priority. Lyons said the alarm systems would be funded and bonded through the town as a Capital project. The Board of Education has sent a request to the Capital Committee and plan on sending another request next year in hopes of developing a more comprehensive school-wide fire alarm system. In the process, Lyons stated that they’ll have both schools upgraded to the new fire codes. Tune in for the full report.
