FROM THE NEWSROOM: The East Putnam Fire Department was opened with an official ribbon cutting ceremony and open house today. The new station is replacing the old building from 1955, which was inadequate for the communitys growing and expanding needs. The new facility will not only serve the citizens of Putnam, but will also be a training facility for fire districts around the area, due to the size and capacity of the new station. Doug Cutler Jr., East Putnam Fire Department President, believes that the new station will be very beneficial for the community. While the process was challenging, Cutler said, the new facility was a combined community effort and is built to last for at least 100 years. The project was partially funded by a $3.3 million U.S. Department of Agriculture loan through the Rural Development Program and has been ongoing since 2001. Democratic Congressman Joe Courtney helped the town secure this loan, as there were some difficulties in securing financing. Courtney also spoke about how this project, combined with many other USDA funded projects, will improve infrastructure in Putnam and will facilitate industry around the area. He further explained that he feels that the USDA understands that small towns around America, including Putnam, can benefit from funding for critical infrastructure projects.
