FROM THE NEWSROOM: The Northeastern Conn. Council of Governments - TopicsExpress

FROM THE NEWSROOM: The Northeastern Conn. Council of Governments is still waiting to learn if it will be the recipient of a $174,000 grant that would help with controlling the feral cat population in regional towns. According to NECCOG Executive Director John filchak, the grant would fund a Trap-Neuter-Return program, which includes capturing feral cats, bringing them to the vet to be examined, given a rabies vaccine and spayed or neutered, and then letting the cats go. NECOG applied for the state grant last December through the Regional Performance Incentive Program. Filchak said the program – while somewhat controversial – would show a very dramatic reduction in the number of stray cats in participating towns in a three to four year time period, if its put into place. Feral cats have increasingly become a problem in many Conn. towns; Filchak hopes the grant and program would lessen the issues created by the stray animals. He says many people want the cats to be captured and exterminated, but that it is not an option the council plans to pursue. Tune in for the full report.
