FROM THE NEWSROOM: The Town of Thompson has been denied a Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP) grant from the state that would have allowed improvements to be made at the Community Fire Companys fire station on Riverside Drive station. First Selectman Paul Lenky announced at Tuesdays Board of Selectmen meeting that he received correspondence from the state this week informing the town that the $500,000 STEAP grant will not be awarded. Lenky said he was uncertain about why the application was denied, but acknowledged that the grants are highly competitive. Officials have said that Community Fires station must undergo an expansion, but after this new development, work likely will not move forward this year. As previously reported, the aging fire department in North Grosvenordale is lacking in space, and as standard apparatus get larger, it has become more difficult for fire personnel to make their current space work. Lenky told WINY that one of the stations fire trucks blocks at least one lane of traffic when pulling out of its garage bay—saying there is a need to position the facility further off of the roadway. There were no members of Community Fire present to make comment; Lenky stated last night that he had yet to inform officials of the news. Tune in for the full report.
