FROM THE NEWSROOM: (UPDATE) Pomfret Fire Marshal Ray Allen says that that a home in that town where a chimney caught fire over the weekend had very minor damage to its interior. As reported, a fire at 210 Paine Rd early Sunday morning resulted in no injuries, according to Fire Chief Derek May. The call for the fire came in to QVEC dispatch at 1:45 a.m. Sunday morning; Arriving units found active fire in the walls near a chimney connected to a wood stove. Crews were able to open up the walls and extinguish the fire before it extended into the roof area. Fire Marshal Allen says the fire was accidental in nature, and occurred when fire from a wood stove spread to the chimney. Allen urges residents to have chimneys and wood stoves inspected yearly for cracks in the mortar and other issues that can arise over time. He says the family that owns the home was not displaced by the fire, and that most of the damage was contained to the exterior of the house. Neither the residents nor any first responders were injured. The Pomfret Fire Department responded to the incident early Sunday, with automatic mutual aid coming from Hampton, Dayville, Mortlake, Eastford, FAST teams from Bungay and Attawaugan, and KB ambulance on standby. The blaze was reportedly under control just before 2:45 a.m.
