FROM THE NEWSROOM: (VOTE TODAY, POMFRET) The citizens of Pomfret will have the chance to collectively make their decision on whether or not they wish to buy into Putnam’s Quinebaug Regional Technology Park at a special town meeting tonight. WINY spoke with town First Selectman Maureen Nicholson on the subject, and she explained her thoughts on why the $80,000 investment – which would make Pomfret a 10% proprietor of the park – is a valuable one. “Pomfret is never going to have an industrial park or a tech park, and it’s a way for us to invest in that kind of a facility in northeastern Connecticut that may benefit the region,” she said. The outcome of the regional project, when the park will be completed, and when revenue will begin to return to towns that invested in it are all factors that cause many to see the project as “the big unknown,” as Nicholson put it. However, Nicholson sees the indefinite time-frame as the biggest drawback for Pomfret, as “the town…is in a very healthy financial situation.” She added, “If it is approved by the voters, that wouldn’t be an issue in our budget this year—it would be something that we would factor into our budget in future years.” Town officials are still discussing what the best payment plan would be. Pomfret residents are encouraged to attend the informational meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Pomfret Community School, where questions and concerns can be brought forth and answered. Following the meeting, a popular vote will take place to decide whether or not Pomfret will become the second town to invest in the regional tech park venture. Tune in for the full report.
