FROM THE NEWSROOM: With ideas under consideration to help expand the Downtown area in Putnam, the Economic Development Commission is once again looking at beautification options for Providence Street. Economic and Community Development Director Delpha Very says it has always been a goal of the commission to expand Downtowns reach, and Providence Street is seen as a suitable location due to the high level of vehicular traffic, which Very says is among the highest in eastern Conn. Very, who says that recently, the Beautification Committee, an advisory entity to the commission, literally took to the streets – walking the area to see, from the ground, what can be done to breathe more life into that area. In the past, there was a multi-phase streetscape project that included pocket park installation, in-fill, build-out, and facade and sidewalk improvements. The commission plans to look into the latter phases of that project to see if some of those efforts can be continued. As for when that process can start, Very says it depends entirely on funding. The commission will be looking into options going forward, and several programs may have to be married together to make the improvements happen. Tune in for the full report.
