FROM THE NEWSROOM: With the pool of numbers in the 860 area of Connecticut quickly drying up, the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority has announced that at the end of August, a new 959 area code will be added into the existing region. PURA has been working since mid-2013 to oversee the implementation of the new area code, and spokesman Michael Coyle says that it will have minimal impact on customers, as it will not require them to change their existing numbers. He cites the years of experience with ten-digit dialing as another reason for what he hopes is a smooth transition. Local calling areas, prices and coverage areas will not change due to the overlay, and customers will still dial 911, 411 and other three-digit services numbers in the same manner. Coyle says that to get ready for the new numbers, customers should ensure that all automatic dialing services recognize 959 as a valid area code. This includes equipment such as life safety systems, fax machines, and alarms. For more information, you can check PURAs website at ct.gov/pura for periodic updates. Tune in for the full report.
