FROM TODAYS CHEERS AND JEERS IN THE PRESS REPUBLICAN - LETS HELP SUSAN TOBIAS - CHEERS to clubs and organizations who submit calendar items to the Press-Republican with complete information. It might sound self-serving, but it is local organizations and members of the public who lose something when we are unable to run information on a benefit or event because of missing details. Susan Tobias wrote a Pinch of Time column earlier this year regarding her work with the Community Calendar, which appears on Fridays. We also have an 8 Days arts calendar on Thursdays. Many submissions required Tobias to call back the event sponsors or search their websites for specific addresses, times, dates and other missing information. If all needed information isn’t given to readers, who could be tourists or someone who recently moved here, the event won’t be as well attended as it could be. With most people using GPS systems to locate travel destinations, street number and name are important. Also, at the first of the year we ran a notice with our Community Calendar stating that recurring events needed to be submitted anew with specific dates. We are happy that to say that the majority of clubs and organizations listened, submitting new announcements for 2014. Thanks to their response, we are better able to serve readers — and that means they can show up to support fundraisers, take part in fun events, listen to informative lectures and more.
