FROM WWW.TCPALM.COM Barn Theatres Pin Curls one beauty of a show By Angela Smith Thursday, Nov. 14, 2013 The Barn Theatre is well on its way to building a successful season after its newest production, “Pin Curls,” opened last week to laughs and an even few tears. Running through Nov. 24, the comedy by local playwright Gale Baker takes folks back to World War II when rationing was the norm, the radio played patriotic hits and women flooded the workforce. Baker’s writing and first-time director Jeanette Mazzella’s simple touch does a fine job of bringing out the comedic side of how women on the homefront lived and survived. Set in a southern beauty parlor, “Pin Curls” tells the story of beautician Betty Lou (Amanda Lynn Photenhauer), who makes the tough decision to go off to war as an Army nurse, leaving her fiance Sam (Joe Pierson) and her beauty pals behind. Betty Lou gives theatergoers a moment to question the ladies who wanted more out of life during those transitional days. With plenty of twists, turns and surprises of love, friendship and tragedy, the three-act play gives audience members like myself a roller-coaster ride of entertainment. This is an interesting way to look at how war affects relationships. The production, of course, only scratches the surface of the period’s political tensions, but is filled with plenty of one-line zingers. It’s so refreshing and modern — it’s hard to believe it was written in 1985. The cast, including supporting cast-members, Barn newcomer, Liz Milner (Lois) and theater veteran, Greta Goldstein (Maude), all do admirable jobs. But Martin County High School senior Victoria Hadel was the standout, keeping people laughing with her phenomenal job as promiscuous hairstylist Joline. She kept the show’s momentum going at any sign of dullness. IF YOU GO What: “Pin Curls” When: Through Nov. 24; 8 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday Where: Barn Theatre, 2400 S.E.
