FROM the desk of Leon Ashby. {Re-posted by FREE Paul Kuhn} Hi FREE readers, In coming posts I will put my views out there on some big Issues. You should already know I have looked at the science of climatology and found flimsy evidence that humans will overheat the planet - so Australia is wasting money trying to reduce CO2 emissions. You already know I believe our governments constantly overstep the mark regarding limiting our freedoms. The nanny state that controls your actions, thinking and choices is not what I want for Australia. The relationship between Federal and State governments is also a problem in my view. I see the Federal Government wanting to take more and more control of everything. The referendum Australians will vote on (regarding Council recognition in the constitution), I believe is an attempt to increase centralised Federal government control, thereby bypassing state powers. In my view Federal responsibilities should predominately be only on issues of National security and National infrastructure (defence, communications, roads, ports, controlling borders and quarantining etc) I think states should make their own decisions on health, education, environmental regulations etc. By having differences between states means we can vote with our feet if one state is better or worse than another. One example was when death duties were in force in most states except QLD so when thousands moved to Qld to avoid death duties, the laws changed. Thats why I like states having differences, the states have to compete for good policies or they lose people and prosperity. I also believe that catchment areas, industries (E.g. Fishing, forestry, trucking etc) and special interest communities (disabled, sporting, film making etc) should drive the direction of their own future. In my view government should assist the grass roots community make those decisions, not be a dictator as the Murray Darling Basin Plan, marine parks plans, and the way trucking, environmental and bikie laws have been imposed on us. We have the technology to allow every person in a catchment, industry or community group to be able to participate ( talk, email or vote) to work out ways to make our society function better. Today Estonia votes its politicians in online. Why can`t Australia extend that system to every stakeholder in an industry or a community so we can accurately know what stakeholders truly think on important issues. I believe Australians can develop a more participatory democracy, which informs us first of the facts then finds solutions to our problems. If I become a senator I will be pushing for a clearer segregation of responsibilities between state and Federal governments. The first step though will be the rejection of the council recognition referendum we are having shoved on us at this next election Catch you again soon Leon
