FULL THROTTLE AT BLUE RIBBON RACEWAY, HORSHAM Fresh from a win last Saturday night at Avalon Raceway Ash Parkinson would have to be considered a favourite to take out the Victorian Modified Production Championship this weekend to be held at Blue Ribbon Raceway, Horsham followed closely by friend and fellow competitor Mark Carlin in his new FG Falcon. Carlin’s car looked very strong throughout the heat races in its inaugural run at Avalon Raceway breaking the ten lap record in the process. Also running an FG Falcon is Nyora hard charger Russell Bent, although not having the success in the features this year that he was accustomed to last season, Bent is a strong performer and can’t be discounted to be on the podium at the end of the race. The Victorian Modified Production Association held one of their popular Victorian Series rounds at Blue Ribbon Raceway in February and it was Chris Hayden piloting a VS Commodore that took a convincing win on that night and followed it up a month later taking out the Pa Higgs Memorial at Riverland Speedway, Renmark and most recently pairing up with another Australian Champion Daniel Barton in the Street Stock category at Borderline Speedway, Mount Gambier piloting their Commodore to victory in the 20/20 Feature for Street Stocks showing his versatility and adaptability to any vehicle and class. Hayden was particularly comfortable on the Blue Ribbon track saying that he felt that he could put his car anywhere and it felt good on the night. Perennial favourite Graham West from Bendigo in the Holden LJ Torana which is one of the oldest cars that you will see racing in this Victorian Championship and will be at the forefront of the leader board especially if the track conditions fall into his hands perhaps slickening off a little would be to his liking. The Victorian Championship has attracted a field of 37 entries with nearly all of the competitors hailing from Victoria with the exception of Jeremy McClure from South Australia. Normally the Championship would attract more interstate drivers but with this year the Australian Championship being held at Attwell Park, Albany in Western Australia and the time frame for interstate drivers to compete in Victoria and then recoup and travel through to Western Australia is obviously a huge commitment that no one was willing to take on with higher stakes at hand in the forthcoming weeks. The entrants for this weekend include five former Australian Champions Mark Carlin, Ashley Parkinson, David Smith, Justin Drew and Christopher Hayden, Mildura entries are represented by David Dolic, Peter “Spider” McCarthy, Mark Sheen, Daniel Drewett and Martin Hawson. The list of young up and coming guns include many former Junior drivers such as Zac Swanson, Brody Chrystie, Daniel Simpson, Adam Holt, Nick Hill and Matt Nelson. The remainder of the entries are made up of Trevor Mills, Leigh Bourke, Brenton Mills, Jeff Leahy, Ross Madden, Russell Felsovary, Gavin Catley, Chris Reick, Jayde Aarts, Kim Killeen, Michael Hetherington, Nathan Ehms, Paul Sheen, Dale Hallett, Kellie Atkins, Rodney Burr, late entry Tim Williams and lone local Horsham entrant Neil Watson in his unusual weapon of choice, a Holden Statesman. This will be an amazing display of Modified Productions with recent racing being three and four cars wide and a take no prisoners attitude. You can be assured that this Victorian Championship is the premium sedan class in the State at the moment and will give you bang for your buck on Saturday night at Blue Ribbon Raceway, Horsham.
