FUND RAISING DINNER:: PDP CRASS IMPUNITY: While waiting to watch the 10 o clock news on Channels TV last night, suddenly the Fund Raising Dinner of PDP was shown live and out of curiosity,I sat glued to the TV watching the events Before I got distracted and I went to deal with more pressing issues, almost 20 Billion Naira was raised through pledges by individuals, corporate organizations and government agencies In all honesty, everything was going fine until some people came to the podium pledging huge sums and informing us that some government agencies are their sponsors. Major culprits during the Naira Rain are Hajiya Bola Shagaya and her group which donated N5Billion and Tunde Ayeni(Chairman Acess Bank) who made a personal donation of N1Billion and another N2Billion from the group he represents making a total sum of N3Billion The huge donation according to the Electoral Act runs foul of the law. Section 221 of the 1999 Constitution prohibits any organ of Government be it Executive,Parastatals,MDAs,Legislative or Judiciary from contributing to the election expenses of any candidate or aspirant. The Electoral Act Section 90 of the Code of conduct for Political Parties and Elections limits individual donations and contributions to a maximum of N1m and corporate organization to N1B. Also the Electoral Act, Section 91 criminalizes contravention of limitation on election expenses. A Presidential Candidate who knowingly contravenes it is liable to a maximum fine of N1, 000,000.00 or imprisonment for a period of12 months or both.
