FUNDAMENTAL #10: Discover and Develop Your Core Talents and Gifts Every person is born with some natural talents and abilities that if discovered, developed and deployed commercially, that person will become a money magnet. What you need to do is to discover your core competencies, your key dominant talents, then focus on developing them into skills. A skill is a developed talent, gift or competency. Your developed talents or gifts will open doors for you. King Solomon once observed, ““A gift opens the way for the giver and ushers him into the presence of the great.” (Proverbs 18:16) The world is full of talented people who are miserable and failures simply because they have not discovered their natural talents, they have not developed them into skills and they are working in areas that do not employ their core skills. They have simply allowed their education to define their career paths. Again, learning from the wisest king that ever lived, here is another profound statement he made; “Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve before kings; he will not serve before obscure men.” (Proverbs 22:29) I have come to discover that Kings do pay very well unlike obscure men. I have a few key skills that I have developed and using in my life. One of them is writing. I have produced a few commercially viable publications. One of my publications, “an Export Guide for SMEs in Southern Africa”, was published by InWent (now called GIZ) with funding from the German government. I am so proud that my publication is in use in five African countries and it was even translated into Portuguese! There are hundreds of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in these countries that I have trained and are now exporting because of the knowledge they get from my publication. I just love it. And of course, I was paid handsomely for my work. The point I want to stress is that your success is connected to your natural talents and gifts. If you discover these, spend time to develop them, then find a way of offering them commercially, you will become a money magnet. God has already deposited treasure in you, mine it. “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.” (1 Peter 4:10-11) ACTION POINT: Write down at least 20 of your talents, gifts and abilities. Select the top 3 which are commercially viable and you are truly passionate about utilizing them. Make it your life-long goal to develop these gifts and talents into commercially viable skills. “Serve others faithfully, administering God’s grace in its VARIOUS forms”
