FUNDAMENTAL #11: Be a Solution, a Problem-Solver The whole reason why God blessed you with talents and abilities is for you to serve others, to be a solution to the needs of other people, to be a problem-solver. The verse we quoted in fundamental #10 applies here as well: “Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, he should do it as one speaking the very words of God. If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides…” (1 Peter 4:10-11) For each one of your top talents and gifts that you will commit to develop into a commercially viable skill, there are corresponding needs in society for which you need to be a solution to. You might have organization skills, use them to organize others, or events. You might have leadership skills, use them to be a leader to the leaderless, offer leadership to those seeking guidance. Your skills must lead you to find corresponding needs in society where you might use them commercially as well as freely where necessary. Each day ask yourself; “How can I be a solution to the needs and problems that my community or country is facing? How can I utilize my skills to be of service to the largest number of people possible?” If you succeed to solve some huge challenges, your rewards will be huge. Just imagine, if you solved problems for 1 million Malawians, and each one of them paid you K1,000, what will be your total reward financially? Several years ago a young man saw that computers had terrible software. Users had to memorize many combinations just to operate the computer. This young man thought to himself, “surely there must be a better and simpler way of using a computer.” As they say, the rest is history, Microsoft was born, several versions of Windows have been released, and here I am, using Windows 8! And guess what? The world still continues to reward this man with so much money that he has become the richest man in the world for more than a decade. His name is Bill Gates. ACTION POINT: For each one of your top three skills / talents, find needs is society to which you can be a solution. Be on the lookout for problems that you can solve. Find ways to deploy your skills to serve the largest number of people commercially. Aim to make your skills your employer.
