FUNDAMENTAL #16: Monitor and Evaluate Run your life as a project. Have a Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) department that ensures that you remain on track and progressing as you work on your goals. Without constantly monitoring and evaluating your progress, you are bound to fail. You might take a wrong turn in life and travel so far in the wrong direction that it will costs you years to redirect your life into the right direction. Periodically “close shop” to do some stock-taking of your life. Critically evaluate the progress made on your goals, analyzing the challenges you might be facing and re-strategizing on how to overcome them. Once every quarter, you must dedicate a full day where you will retreat and do this important exercise. Do this without fail every quarter, four times a year. As you evaluate your goals, ask yourself some soul-searching questions such as: 1. Which goals was I working on during the quarter under review? 2. What progress have I made so far? 3. Am I on track, behind schedule or performing above expectations? 4. What issues have I faced that have challenged my progress? 5. What must I do differently in the next quarter to accelerate my progress? 6. What excess baggage must I off-load in order to focus on my goals? 7. How should I re-strategize? 8. What extra help must I enlist to achieve progress? 9. What new /extra disciplines must I engage? Monitoring your progress on the other hand, must be done on a daily basis. Each day you must plan to do specific things / take action on your goals. Then you must periodically review your progress as the day goes. In the evening, take time to review your overall progress for that day and plan the next day. There are some goals that you might need to enlist the help of other trusted friends to help you remain on track. For example, if you have committed to pursue a degree course, write a book, build a house, start a business, you might want to share these goals with a few trusted friends with whom you will set up an “Accountability Club” where members will hold each other accountable. Let the Accountability Club meet at least once a month and hold each other accountable by discussing the progress each member is making and challenges faced. ACTION POINT: Find trusted friends (three to five) with whom you will form an Accountability Club. Share with each other your key goals for 2015. Develop a code of conduct for the club. Commit to hold monthly personal accountability meetings where you will each share the progress you are making on your goals and you will critic / evaluate / help each other.
