FV721 CVR(W) shown with swimming screen up, it could manage 5 km/h in water, and during Exercise Corinthian in Queensland, Australia in 1969. Development of the FV721 Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance (wheeled) or CVR(W) commonly known as ‘Fox’ began in 1965. It was the wheeled alternative to the Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance (Tracked) or CVR(T). The advantage of having wheels is that they are faster and quieter, but theyre not as effective as tracks over rough terrain. Although designed by Daimler, the contract to build the Fox was given to the Royal Ordnance Factory in Leeds in 1971. Fox entered service in 1975 - despite its advantages, it proved to be unstable in certain situations and was withdrawn in 1994. The Fox’s 30 mm Rarden Canon turret replaced turrets on some Scorpions, giving rise to a new reconnaissance vehicle, known as the Sabre. It was used for training purposes by the Driving and Maintenance School, Royal Armoured Corps at Bovington and became a part of the collection in May 2005.
