FYI An opportunity exists for a fabulous Aboriginal artist to create some work for a new development in Parramatta referencing particular historical aspects relating to a site in CBD area, working with Milne Stonehouse. Please send a 1-paragraph biography and visual examples of your work to [email protected] prior to 20 June. Please see summary below regarding the area: "Parramatta was an important centre for Aboriginal culture prior for the colony’s establishment and there was armed resistance to settlements as far as Bathurst up until 1824. Governor Macquarie initiated an annual feast to entice families to leave their children to be educated at the school and an exchange of blankets ensued as part of the festivities. By the 1820’s the Darug lived mostly outside of the Parramatta township and their presence at the feasts aroused curiosity among the township especially when the leader Windradeyne of the Wiradjuri people was present to have peace talks with Governor Macquarie. This exchange occurred close to St John’s Church in an open field to enable large gatherings. Parramatta’s role as a centre for cultural exchange and celebration continues today with the diverse cultural groups which inhabit and meet. This concept inverts the generous but paternal exchange offered Aboriginal groups and effects the provision for cultural exchange by Aboriginal people for Non- Aboriginal people. The overlay of an Aboriginal artwork on the building celebrates the wealth of Aboriginal culture which Parramatta embraced in its place names and its gradual acceptance of the value of alternative cultural voices."
