FYI: Living off reserve you will pay a rent or mortgage anywhere - TopicsExpress

FYI: Living off reserve you will pay a rent or mortgage anywhere from 500 to 2000 a month; if anything breaks in your home, and you dont have the extra money to pay for it there is noone who you can call who will come over to you house to fix or replace whatever it is? If your sidewalk, school, or roads are messed up, you have to wait for that city, town, province, or RM to come and repair whatever is damaged... I know a lot of people who would be beyond grateful to have a house where no rent is paid, where if something breaks in your home that you are able to pick up the phone and call to have someone come over and repair it at no charge... It is so easy for people to point fingers and judge what they dont understand - I know, because I was one of those people who ranted about shit too - sitting on this side of the fence I see more clearly what the situation is and frankly, Im getting a taste of my own medicine - I try to explain to people thatvwe are cronically underfunded and what we do have is generally cut back and clawed back either because they (AANDC) say we didnt spend it how we should have, or we didnt spend it at all therfore we must not need it... We are almost 9million dollars in debt, what we get for funding every month just barely covers our bills owing for that month, not to mention the half million in back bills that we are trying to catch up on and the emergency stuff that comes up.... The CMHC program requires us to collect rent on housing - our band has not done this for some time - because we dont collect rent we have no housing program that allows us to get more housing built in the past AANDC has paid rents for SA clients, but wont anymore until bands start collecting from working families - in order to get a ministerial loan from government to allow more housing units this has to be implemented. As for infrastructure, we only receive a minimal amount to take care of the many needs in the community - roads, schools, buildings, water, sewer and so much more all comes out of the same pot of money and if youve seen the news lately the government plans to claw back more monies from here too... I would like to just ignore all the negativity, but I cant - I signed on to help my community and I am doing the very best that I can with whatever Im given to work with - I would like to see more support from the community, if you have an issue Ill listen, if you have a recommendation Ill listen, but if all you want to do is criticize then I have no time for it - Ekosi
