With- Fiji Locally Managed Marine Area The Institute of Marine Resources is offering a public seminar, Extinction risks of sea cucumbers (beche-de-mer) and a global analysis of fishery stocks and management effectiveness DATE: 11 February 2014 VENUE: School of Marine Studies Conference Room TIME: 3:30 to 4:30pm Speaker: Dr Steven Purcell – National Marine Science Centre, Southern Cross University, Australia Steve is a Senior Research Fellow at Southern Cross University, within the School of Environment, Science & Engineering through its National Marine Science Centre at Coffs Harbour. After completing a PhD in 1998 at James Cook University, Steve conducted research on trochus fishery restocking with Department of Fisheries Western Australia and sea cucumber fisheries ecology in New Caledonia with the WorldFish Center. His current research specialises on sea cucumber fisheries of the Indo-Pacific, in partnership with agencies including ACIAR, The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community. Steve’s research spans a range of ecological and biological fields, published in several books, book chapters and over 30 scientific research articles.
