FYI: The new official GSUSA Alumni Newsletter is out today. Here are some highlights from it: (all but the links, and you can get the page version at the end of this). Our CEO writes: On behalf of GSUSA and Girl Scouts everywhere, I want to welcome you to our new alumnae newsletter. Every other month, we will let you know what is happening throughout the Girl Scout Movement, and ask you to share your favorite Girl Scout stories and memories with us. You will learn all about our cutting-edge programs and exciting new campaigns, like Ban Bossy, a result of our partnership with Sheryl Sandbergs Lean In foundation. In every edition, you will read about the inspiring things our girls and alumnae do every day, and discover how you can raise your voice on behalf of girls. If you see something you like, let us know; or better yet, share it with your friends. Thank you for your ongoing dedication to Girl Scouts and your commitment to making the world a better place. Together, we can help mold the next generation of female leaders. Anna Maria Chávez Chief Executive Officer Girl Scouts of the USA OUR PROGRAM IN ACTION Remember, as a Girl Scout, making your community a better place to live? Did you use your cookie money to do it? Girl Scouts today still do. One troop of Mississippi Brownies was hanging out at the local park when they noticed something: kids in wheelchairs couldnt play on the swings like they could. So in true Girl Scout fashion, they took action. They connected with the mayor and city council and asked them to make the park wheelchair accessible, and then used their cookie money to buy the necessary equipment. How amazing is that? Share your favorite Girl Scout memories with us at [email protected]. For over 100 years, Girl Scouts have been doing big things—and having fun doing them. Learn more about our program.>> WHATS NEW LETS BAN BOSSY TOGETHER Did anyone ever call you “bossy when you were a little girl? How about now? Words like bossy are shown to discourage girls and women from taking charge and doing big things—and its time to turn this around. Thats why were proudly partnering with Facebook COO Sheryl Sandbergs LeanIn to bring you Ban Bossy, a public service campaign to help girls flex their leadership muscles—something weve been doing at Girl Scouts for more than a century. Watch the PSA and you will also find tips to share with the girl in your life. SPOTLIGHT GO GOLD: KATHY When she arrived in the United States from Honduras at age 12, Kathy couldnt speak English. Determined to learn, she turned to books and taught herself, recognizing education as empowerment and a way to address the hardship shed faced as a victim of human trafficking, and setting herself up for success in a new country. For her Gold Award project, Kathy wanted to give other at-risk students in her Orlando community opportunities to improve their English skills and grades, so she built them a learning library. Be the mentor she calls in 10 years.
