FYI, and not to detract in any way from Douglas Adams brilliant trilogy in four parts, I would like to point out that it had all been done before 10 years earlier. Robert Sheckleys comic masterpiece Dimension of Miracles is so similar as to be an obvious inspiration to Adams. The story parallels and language style are startlingly similar even the characters are familiar (especially the planetary engineer who designed Earth) - Well worth a read for those Hitch-hiker aficionados.
