FYI from my Wonderful FB friend Robert Ward... Thrilled to see that Shout Factory is releasing all 144 episodes oh HILL STREET BLUES. Ive been hoping this would finally happen. Means all of our work on the show can be enjoyed by future generations. (And man did we work!). Hope all of you who were fans will get the complete set. You wont be disappointed. Hooray! Robert Ward... I worked on Hill Street Blues for the last two years and was credited with eleven scripts, though I wrote on many more. We all worked on some we didnt get credit on. Thats the way of tv. But they pay you mucho dinero and i had the best time of my life working with the brilliant people on that show including David Milch. Jeffrey Lewis, Waylon Green, (Waylon wrote among other things The Wild Bunch) Dick Wolf (who at the end of the last year said I have this pilot I wrote on spec called Law and Order. Id like you to read it, make notes. I read it, made like one minor note and told him to hand it in. The rest is tv history). Jacob Epstein. Chris Williams, David Black, Jeff Melvoin, Terry Fox, John Romano, and a few others. We were like a band of brothers, worked our asses off, and no one would settle for less than their best effort. The worst thing anyone could say about anyone elses script is Oh man, thats like television. Though David once called one guys script Great! Great for Cannon. I was wasted by the end of every week but happy too because I knew what we were doing was first rate. Thanks to Steve Bocchco and Mike Kozol for creating and running the show, which was probably the best and most intense experience of my life. A couple of you asked privately what I did on the show so this is it. I was officially titled Story Editor the first year but jumped to Co-Producer the second year. With attendant jump in pay and responsibilities. Working with those guys taught me more about story and character than I ever learned anywhere. You learned on the fly, wrote, re-wrote and re-wrote but, in the end, it was worth it. I feel happy this show is back out for all my buds on the show, actors, crew, directors, like my bud John Hancock, as well. And somewhere my dear old pal Kiel Martin (Detective JD LaRue) is smiling.....Robert Ward
