The march commemorates the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. made his historic “I Have A Dream” speech. Social workers also played a key role at that march -- social work icons National Council of Negro Women President Dorothy I. Height and National Urban League President and past NASW President Whitney M. Young Jr. helped plan the 1963 event. Feel free to talk about the March and post photos on social media such as Facebook and Twitter. Be sure to include the NASW hashtag -- #NASW – so subscribers can search for your messages about the march. Media representatives will be at the this year’s march and we encourage you to talk to them about your experiences at the march. Please identify yourself as a social worker or member of the National Association of Social Workers – we want to let the public know social workers continue to be involved in events aimed at improving society and securing equal treatment for all. We also encourage you to direct the media to Mel Wilson, MBA, MSW, LCSW, manager of NASW’s Department of Social Justice and Human Rights. Mr. Wilson can give the media more information on how NASW and social workers around the nation will continue to work on social issues addressed at the March, including voting rights, racial profiling, immigration reform, criminal and juvenile justice reforms.
