FYI...... the recreation department does not cancel the games. The Parks department checks the field before 6am and also looks at the forecast. If additional staff is required there is a 4 hour time and a half overtime rate required to each employee & then if the ASA officials decide the fields are unplayable or stop the games, they get also get paid regardless. Then if anyone is injured and the field is considered questionable both the town and the umpires association are liable, but we all know nobody would ever sue them, right? Comments about my not putting time into this shows the lack of understanding. When I got the cancellation call at 6am, I email each manager, post on facebook, contact Newburgh ASA & then call the 6 umpires. Then I start calling each team trying to reschedule weeknight games to keep the playoff schedule in place. The Parks Dept has done a tremendous job making our fields the best in the area & their budget has constraints, so I think they have done an excellent job.Years ago, the league tried delaying start times and several teams forfeited because they were unable to play later in the day because players had plans or commitments. I would like nothing better than to have the games played as scheduled.
