Fabio Maldonado stops Hans Stringer, celebrates on the cage with Anderson Silva after After two truly awful fights on the main card of tonights (Sat., Oct. 25, 2014) UFC 179: Aldo vs. Mendes 2 pay-per-view (PPV) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Fabio Maldonado was called out to the cage to have some fun throwing hands with Hans Stringer in what was expected to be a candidate for Fight of the Night when all was said and done. So, naturally, Stringer opened with a takedown and the crowd was booing less than one minute in. He struggled to do much of anything with his superior positioning, due mostly to Maldonado playing good defense tying up his opponents arms and awaiting a stand up from the referee. To his credit, the ref allowed the two to work it out on there own, although it did the fight itself no favors. And the fans, who were already struggling, were ready to revolt. The action didnt pick up until late in the second when Maldonado reversed position and found himself on top landing clubbing blows. They increased in frequency until the referee prompted Stringer to fight back. When he stayed turtled up, Fabio blasted away with a flurry of punches that forced a stoppage. In a nice moment that completely overshadowed the previous 10 minutes or so, Anderson Silva jumped up on the Octagon and celebrated with Maldonado much to the delight of the fans in attendance who were booing just minutes before.
