Face world... I have a question. Do you discount your art / passion if everyone else is doing it and it will increase your sales? I own a small business (Dark Monk) which employes 3 artist (including myself). We work very long hours to design and build the best possible equipment, forgoing much better paying jobs and easier lives and we LOVE almost every minute of it. Given the feedback we receive, our equipment art and devotion to the artist we serve seems to be loved immensely. So, should I discount our art because almost everyone else is doing that or does discounting devalue what we do and create a long term negative impression that our company is just an equipment Walmart? 1. Our patrons are price sensitive, yet our art is priced at or often just below market value and the quality is some of if not the best out there. 2. Artist dont always know what a piece of great vs ok vs not good at all equipment looks like (which is common for a lot of art forms). People also dont understand how important having the equipment fit them is and how rare it is for a company to help as much as we do creating that fit. So our arts true value might be lost on some portion of our audience anyway. 3. I am concerned about the perception of devaluing our art. If we ever say that what we create can just be discounted at certain times of the year, just because it is a certain time of the year, what does that say about the real value of what we do? Our creations dont belong in JC Pennies, they are more of an Apple item. By and large Apple doesnt devalue their creations by running sales (they do some now, but they are very small). They just make some of the best quality products on the planet and people love them for it. 4. At the end of the day, I am responsible for keeping the lights on and making sure Adrian, Alex and myself get some paycheck at the end of the month. We are not closing our doors or anything, but being an equipment design/manufacturing shop has very little margins to afford to run a business on (which many people really dont know/understand). So increasing sales before the winter slow down might be important. So Faceworld, what say you?
